I was out and about yesterday. I had a doctors’ appointment. I heard on the radio how Melania Trump, is the first, First Lady that’s not plastered on the front covers of a bunch of magazines for the holidays. Whether this is true or not, I don’t know. But I figured I’d like to know a bit more about Our First Lady.
This article is about Melania Trump, The First Lady, and not about her husband, Donald Trump-45th, President of the USA. I am going to try to stick to the basic facts, just to get to know who Melania is, as a woman.
Viktor and Analja Knavs are the parents of Melanija Knavs. Melanija was born on April 26th, 1970, in Nova Mesto, Slovenia (at that time, it was part of Yugoslavia). Viktor, Melanja’s father, managed a state-owned car and motorcycle dealership. While Amalija, Melanija’s mother, worked for a kid’s clothing manufacturer, as a pattern maker.
Melanija, as a child, along with other children whose parents worked in the factory, would participate in fashion shows, wearing the clothes’ made in the clothes’ factory. It has been said that her parents were strict and raised their family in a communist-style apartment building. (She is the middle child in the picture).
She has an older sister, Ines, who she was very close with. I read in an article that Ines is a half-sister from an earlier relationship Victor had, had. Its also said that Melanija has a half-brother as well that was kept a secret. She has yet to meet this brother. The half-brother, too, was from another relationship that Viktor, her father, was in.
Victor had his daughters secretly baptized as Catholics. Her father had this done in secret because of the atheist communist regime, in Slovenia, which Viktor belonged to. And the regime had banned any practice of religion. Today, she is the first Catholic to be in the White House since the Kennedy’s.
Her parents moved to a two-story house when Melanija was a teenager. Both her parents knew that their youngest daughter had a better future, then they had. Melanija always had an interest in fashion and modeling. I guess one could say it’s in the blood after all her mom did design clothing. She attended high school in Ljubljana (the capital of Slovenia). Her friends said she was a good student, well organized, with manners. They also remember Melanija as being creative, shy/reserved, and modest.
She also attended the secondary school of Design and Photography in Ljubljana. Then she studied design and architecture at the University of Ljubljana. But after a year, she left school in hopes of a modeling career.
Even though Melanija started modeling at five years old, at 16, she was posing for fashion photographer Stane Jerko. She immediately caught his eye. Melanija was a tall, slender, and attractive long-haired girl with sharp eyes. It was Jerko who first discovered Melanija. He invited her to his studio for a photo shoot, and he knew she would have an “auspicious” career. She soon began doing commercial work. Jerko said, “she was very shy at first, but quickly became comfortable in front of the camera.” The photo’s that he took at that session made up her first portfolio, and it was the start of her professional modeling career. It was around this time that she changed her last name from Knavs to Knauss (German version of Knavs)
In Milan, Italy, when Knauss was 18 years old, she signed on with a model agency. She became a runner-up in 1992 “Look of the Year” contest–Jana Magazine. The competition was held in Ljubljana. The top three winners were promised an international modeling contract.
She went on to model for fashion houses in both Paris and Milan. There is a website I found that stated Melanija posed nude during this time. It was for a monthly French men’s magazine. She was naked in bed alongside Emma Eriksson (a Scandinavian model). This shoot, taken by Jarl Ale de Basseville, said that his images were of “beauty and not porn.” Someone also stated that Melanija behaved like a true professional and was very charming.
In 1996, she moved to Manhattan, NY. There she had plenty of work. She was photographed by well-known photographers like Patrick Demarchelier and Helmut Newton. She appeared on the covers of GQ (said to have posed nude in 2000), Harper’s Bazaar(Bulgaria), Sports Illustrated–swimsuit edition, and Vanity Fair(Italy). It was around this time that she received legal permission to work in the US.
Melania Meets Trump
It was the second half of 1998 when the 28-year-old Melania Knauss met Donald Trump at a party thrown for Fashion Week. I am not sure when she started going by Melania. Perhaps it was when she had her last name changed to Knauss.
Donald was quite smitten with Melania, but Melania was not impressed by the wealthy businessman. He gave her his phone number, which turned out to be his business phone number and Melania said, “What is this? I am not doing business with you”. Donald promptly gives Melania all of his phone numbers. Soon Melania was telling Harper’s Bazaar that Donald was her first New York boyfriend.
Melania and Donald broke up several times while they were dating. It is stated that Donald possibly cheated on Melania. And Melania had significant trust issues. It’s believed she had these issues before she met Donald, but his womanizing past, only made Melania’s matters worse. There was even a time during one break up where Melania rented her apartment, and that was for about 2 1/2 years, that she lived on her own, without Donald in her life.
In 2004 Donald and Melania became engaged. It was the following year, 2005, in Palm Beach, FL, that they said our “I Do’s” to one another, in a fancy ceremony. Melania’s wedding gown was custom-made by Christian Dior, priced at approximately $175,000. She appeared on the front cover of Vogue, wearing her dress. Those that attended this extravagant wedding were; Barbara Walters, Katie Couric, Kelly Ripa, Matt Lauer, and Shaquille O’Neal.
In 2006, Barron William Trump was born. Barron is Donald s 5th child and 3rd son. Also, this is the year that Melania Trump became a US citizen.
Melania started her line of jewelry, in 2010, called Melania’s Timepieces and Jewelry, also was sold on QVC. At high-end department stores was a Melania Skin Care Collection. Her businesses weren’t very lucrative.
On inauguration day, they did get mentioned in Melania’s White House biography, but they were both quickly removed. Her business companies are no longer active. And it was said by a spokesperson that “the First Lady has no intention of using her position for profit and will not do so.”
The White House
As we all know, her husband, Donald Trump became the 45th President of the United States of America on January 20th, 2017. Melania, now being the First Lady, continued living in Manhattan, at the Trump Tower with their son Barron. Melania was determined to let Barron finished out the school year at Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School. That following summer, both Melania and Barron moved into the White House.
The Rest of the Story…
…is currently in the making. But I’ve included some more photos of Melania.
